Hey all, I am looking for ideas and suggestions on how to go about writing a short story. I have this story idea in my head but I don’t know how to put it down on paper. I’ve been writing journals and poems for years now and I would like to try my hand at writing a short story but have no clue how to go about doing it. What advice or suggestions would you give to someone who is just starting out in short story writing? Thanks in advance for all your ideas.

the clue is what why when and where...

...create the character, the plot, the place ect and then flesh it out, before you start writing and be prepared to rewrite and tear your hair out...good luck..smile

Just give it time. The way to write it will suddenly come to you! Don't push it.

Well, if you think of the plot, and characters, and just start writing, polish it as you go. then when your done, leave it for a while, then look back and fix the things you don't like. that's how I did it. Well now I do it that way, and it helps a lot.

Yes I understand the general concept of writing, but how do I go about developing a plot line and characters? I’ve never written anything like this before so I am not quite sure how to do it. Although, I have been known to overanalyze things before so it is quite possible that I am just making a big deal out of nothing. Maybe I guess I am just worried that what I write won’t turn out the way I have in mind.

Well, the stories I write aren't exactly short ones, but I just let the ideas come to me. If an idea comes to me, I briefly write it down and come back to it later and turn it into a story. I dunno how to explain the rest of how I write stories; it just happens, LOL. Hope this helps.

Well if you are thinking of writing a story ideally you should have the characters already in your mind or down on paper, otherwise, you will have a hell of a job starting from scratch ...

Well, as I have already stated, I've already got a basic idea of the plot and characters in my mind but I'm just not sure how to put them down on paper so that it actually makes sense.

I hate it when that happens.

start with the main character establish their part then proceed with the others as the story unfolds
